The Reserve if found within the ancient chain of Eastern Arc Mountains Forest in Tanzania, lying to the North West of East Usambara Mountains falling under three Districts Authorities namely Korogwe, Muheza and Mkinga in Tanga Region. More than 39,000 people from 17 villages are living adjacent the Reserve. The Reserve is included in East Usambara Man and Biosphere Reserve (EUMAB) and the highest Biodiversity value compared to other forest Reserves in East Africa.
