HIKING TIME
Our hiking adventure begins in a small town near Ausangate. From here, we start a short 2 km hike—but don’t underestimate it: the steep trail and high altitude of the Peruvian Andes make it a real challenge. The average hiking time is about 1.5 hours.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Qori Qocha Lake, nestled between the rocks at 4,991 m (16,374 ft), with the snowy Ausangate Mountain rising in the background—perfect for photos and a well-deserved break. If you’d like to go a bit further, you can hike about 30 more minutes to reach a viewpoint near the start of the glaciers.
After exploring one of Cusco’s most impressive high-Andes landscapes—home to Ausangate (6,384 m), the highest mountain in Cusco and the 6th highest in Peru—we return the same way (mostly downhill, so it’s easier). Then we head back to our vehicle for a delicious lunch before traveling directly to Cusco.
