Become our Lokal Curator
Are you ready to turn your hobbies into a business?
We begin our workshop with a brief overview of Newari wood carving, its significance in Kathmandu Valley temples, and a look at traditional tools like chisels and mallets. Observe intricate, pre-existing carvings to understand the design.
Select a piece of local Sal timber and watch as a master artisan demonstrates how to sketch or trace traditional patterns like lotus or Bhutanese motifs onto the wood.
Learn how to hold the chisel and mallet with guided, one-on-one instruction. Carve your own piece, learning techniques for outlining, shaping, and detailing. Finish by polishing your piece and take your handcrafted souvenir home.
