Known as the birthplace of modern Seattle, Occidental Square sits atop layers of buried history. Once the center of the city’s notorious vice district, this area witnessed public executions, corruption, gambling, and the chaos of Seattle’s early frontier days. Today, visitors report shadowy figures wandering the park after dark and an eerie feeling that some of the souls connected to the neighborhood’s violent past never truly left.

Smith Tower
When it opened in 1914, Smith Tower was the tallest building west of the Mississippi and quickly became a symbol of Seattle’s ambition. The historic skyscraper is also one of the city’s most famous haunted locations. Employees and security guards have reported phantom elevator calls, unexplained cold spots, and sightings of a mysterious woman believed to be connected to the building’s legendary Chinese Room and its famous Wishing Chair.

One of Seattle’s oldest continuously operating bars, Merchant's Cafe has been serving drinks since the aftermath of the Great Seattle Fire. Over the years, its upper floors housed a hotel and brothel, creating countless stories that still linger today. Guests and staff have reported whispers, slamming doors, ghostly apparitions, and sightings of children believed to have perished in a historic fire, earning Merchant's a reputation as one of Seattle’s most haunted establishments

Often called Seattle’s oldest bar, J&M Cafe and Cardroom has survived fires, Prohibition, and more than a century of changing fortunes. During Seattle’s “Wide Open Days,” the establishment became a hub for gambling, drinking, and nightlife. Today, reports of phantom footsteps, moving objects, unexplained noises, and ghostly figures roaming the abandoned upper floors have made J&M one of Pioneer Square’s most enduring paranormal legends.
