Lewes Castle
Step back nearly 1,000 years at Lewes Castle, a striking Norman fortress built shortly after the Norman Conquest.
Guests can climb the castle’s original steep staircases where the panoramic views open up across the surrounding countryside and historic rooftops -including a unique vantage point overlooking HM Prison Lewes, an active Victorian prison that adds an unexpected and thought-provoking layer to the landscape below.
Set above the town, the castle’s twin mottes offer panoramic views across the South Downs and over Lewes itself.
Inside, there’s also the option to watch a short film that brings the story of Lewes Castle and its role in English history to life.
What makes this stop particularly unique is the contrast -a thousand-year-old stronghold rising directly above a lively modern high street filled with independent shops, cafés, and daily life continuing around it.
A great mix of history, views, and atmosphere, with time for photos and a short exploration.

Lewes
Prefer to explore the town instead of visiting the museum? This stop gives you the option to enjoy Lewes at your own pace.
Wander through cobbled streets, browse independent shops, and discover one of Sussex’s most characterful market towns. There are also plenty of cafés, bakeries, and restaurants if you would like to relax with a coffee or something to eat.
This is an alternative option for guests who choose not to enter the castle and museum, or for those who would like to split their time between both.
A flexible stop designed to suit different interests, whether you prefer history, shopping, or simply soaking up the local atmosphere.

Wilmington
Pass through the charming village of Wilmington, a classic example of the English countryside with flint cottages, narrow lanes, and centuries-old buildings. Look out for traditional thatched homes, including cottages dating back around 500 years, built using local materials that have shaped the character of Sussex for generations.
This peaceful setting offers a glimpse into rural life that has changed very little over time and sets the scene for the mysterious landmark waiting just beyond the hillside.

Der lange Mann von Wilmington
Who created this giant figure on the hillside and what does it mean? Discover the Long Man of Wilmington, one of England’s most mysterious landmarks. Standing over 75 metres tall, this striking chalk outline is far larger than most expect and pictures rarely do it justice.
At first glance it feels ancient and rooted in history, yet at the same time its clean, bold shape can look almost like a piece of modern art drawn across the hillside. That contrast alone makes it fascinating to see in person.
No one knows exactly who created it or why. Some believe it may link to ancient rituals or early symbolism, while others have their own more unusual theories. Part of the intrigue is deciding what you think it represents.
Best viewed from a distance, this iconic landmark is a true Sussex curiosity and a memorable stop along the South Downs.

Strandkopf
Why is there a lighthouse out in the sea below the cliffs? Discover Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliffs in England, offering dramatic coastal views across the English Channel.
From the clifftop, you’ll see the iconic Beachy Head Lighthouse standing just offshore, built to warn ships of the dangerous coastline below. Along the way, you’ll also pass the well-known Belle Tout Lighthouse, perched on the cliffs and rich in local history.
The scale, height, and open views make this one of the most striking coastal landscapes in the UK and a perfect photo stop.

Aussichtspunkt Belle Tout Leuchtturm
Have you ever wanted to touch the cliffs themselves? This is your chance to experience the Seven Sisters up close, with one of the best viewpoints along the entire coastline.
You can stay on the clifftop for sweeping panoramic views, walk towards the iconic coastline, or head down to the beach and stand right beside the cliffs. There is also the option to visit the nearby café and visitor centre for refreshments or an ice cream.
From here, you may also catch a glimpse of the lighthouse standing out at sea, adding to the dramatic scenery.
The bright white chalk cliffs are not only stunning to look at but also incredibly unique in how they were formed. We will explain more about this on the tour, including why these cliffs exist at all.
A flexible stop with something for everyone, whether you want views, photos, or to explore a little further.

Ostdekan
Did Sherlock Holmes really retire here? As you pass through the picturesque village of East Dean, known for its traditional cricket green and classic English charm, you’ll hear one of its most unusual claims to fame.
According to fans of Sherlock Holmes, this village is believed to be the place where the famous detective retired after his final cases. While never officially confirmed, clues hidden within the original stories have led enthusiasts to this exact spot.
It is a curious mix of fiction and reality that adds an unexpected twist to an otherwise peaceful Sussex village.

This dramatic coastline, often dotted with grazing sheep and cows on the surrounding hillsides, offers truly breathtaking views and has featured in films including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
