Robben Island is considered a must-see destination. The tour to this UNESCO heritage site is a key part of understanding South African history and development. Travelers will hear stories directly from former inmates. Some of the latter refer to the island as a “School of freedom, equality and reconciliation.” Visitors will also explore the natural beauty of the island, the sea and surrounding mountains and the uniqueness of birdlife and wildlife on the island. Besides, an excursion to V&A Waterfront is a requisite opportunity for travellers interested in shopping, adventure, local cultural and culinary delights.

Robben island is one of the most popular attractions in Cape town. Embarking on a ferry from Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront, you will disembark at Murray’s Bay Harbor, east coast of the Island. The latter’s fauna -such as the African Penguins- and flora -such as fynbos- are unique and remarkable. The views of Table Mountain and the city below are spectacular. The bus will transport you to all the historical sites around the Island. You will learn the Island’s multi-layered +500-year-old history from sea voyagers who used it a refueling station and a place of refuge to being used as a banishment place for those regarded as outcasts and troublemakers. The tour route ends at the Maximum-Security Prison -now a museum- where many South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell. After the tour, you will embark on the ferry back to V&A Waterfront. A memorable experience worth visiting.
