Rincon Village is the oldest village in Bonaire and rich in history. It is also the most senior community within the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Initially settled by the Spanish in the early 1500s, Rincon was strategically nestled within a valley to ward off impending danger from pirates and other threats. In the 17th century, enslaved people were brought to Bonaire and worked tending crops and the salt pans until 1863. Living in Rincon, the slave men would walk a 7-hour journey south for work and then return on weekends to gather supplies at Mangazina di Rei (King’s storehouse) and visit their families.
