As we drive through the Kildare plains, we’ll make our way to the medieval Marble City of Kilkenny, named after St. Canice. Here, you'll explore Kilkenny Castle, a stunning 13th-century fortress that overlooks the River Nore, and visit St. Canice’s Cathedral with its iconic round tower. St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's rich history. You'll also hear the tale of Dame Alice Kyteler, the notorious "witch" of the 14th century. For lunch, we’ll stop at Kyteler’s Inn, a historic pub dating back to the 13th century.

Discover the Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny, located on the site of the 13th-century St Mary’s church and graveyard. This museum offers a treasure trove of Kilkenny’s history, with over 800 years of artefacts, including high crosses, carved tombs, and significant finds from the church restoration. Highlights include the ornate Rothe Chapel, tombs of the medieval Rothe family, and the High Cross Exhibition, showcasing Kilkenny’s rich heritage and the foundation of the monastery by St Canice. Kyteler's Inn
Lunch Stop: Dame Alice Kyteler, the original owner of Kyteler’s Inn, was a notable figure from Kilkenny. Known for her wealth and having had four husbands, she became infamous when her rivals accused her of witchcraft, leading to her being condemned to the stake. While the witchcraft charges are now believed to have been false, it’s clear that Kyteler’s Inn was renowned for its lively atmosphere and good Craic.

Kilkenny Design Centre
Kilkenny Design, founded in 1963 by the Irish government, has been at the forefront of Irish design and craftsmanship. Based in Kilkenny City, it began by inviting global artisans to collaborate with local crafters, fostering a vibrant community of designers. This pioneering initiative spotlighted traditional Irish crafts using local materials. The success led to the opening of the first Kilkenny Design store in 1965, with the flagship store on Nassau Street, Dublin, following in 1976.

Kilkenny Castle, built in the 13th century by the Anglo-Normans, has strong historical ties to Richard de Clare, also known as Strongbow. a key figure in the Norman invasion of Ireland and was granted land in Kilkenny. The castle was originally constructed under his influence and later became the principal residence of the Butler family, Earls of Ormond, who held it for over 500 years.
