Some places in Lebanon stop you in your tracks. The Qadisha Valley is one of them — a UNESCO World Heritage gorge so deep and so ancient that Christian monks have been hiding in its cliff-face monasteries since the 4th century. The Cedars of God above it are another — a grove of cedar trees so old that some were already ancient when the Phoenicians cut their neighbours to build the ships that founded Carthage.
This private full-day tour from Beirut takes you to both, along with the mountain town of Bcharre — birthplace of Khalil Gibran, Lebanon's most celebrated poet and author of The Prophet — and his intimate hilltop museum, which holds his paintings, manuscripts, and the tomb where he ch...

8:30 AM — Departure from Beirut
Your private guide and vehicle collect you from your Beirut hotel. The drive north takes you through the coastal highway before climbing steeply into the Lebanese mountains — the landscape shifting from Mediterranean shore to cedar-forested peaks as you gain altitude toward the north.

Vallée de Qadisha
Your first stop is the most dramatic — the rim of the Qadisha Valley, one of the deepest and most breathtaking gorges in the Middle East. Qadisha means "Holy" in Aramaic, and the valley earned that name over seventeen centuries of Christian monasticism — hermits, monks, and entire religious communities carved their churches and cells directly into its sheer limestone cliffs to shelter from persecution. Standing at the viewpoint, the scale of the valley below is genuinely humbling. Your guide points out the cliff monasteries visible in the rock face far below and tells the story of the communities that called this gorge home.

Bcharré
Drive into Bcharre itself — a proud, stone-built mountain town perched at over 1,400 metres above sea level on the edge of the Qadisha gorge. One of the highest permanently inhabited towns in Lebanon, Bcharre has a fierce independent spirit that shaped its most famous son. Stop for photos of the town, the valley below, and the cedar-covered mountain ridge above — a panorama that captures the essence of the Lebanese north in a single frame.

Musée Gibran
Visit the museum dedicated to Khalil Gibran — the Lebanese-American poet, philosopher, and painter whose book The Prophet has sold over 100 million copies and been translated into more than 100 languages, making it one of the best-selling books of the 20th century. The museum is housed in a former Carmelite monastery carved into the cliff above Bcharre and contains an extraordinary collection of Gibran's original oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, and personal manuscripts. His tomb is also here, in the cave chapel at the heart of the monastery, exactly where he asked to be buried.

Bcharré
Lunch in Bcharre — mountain village restaurant
Take a well-earned break at one of Bcharre's traditional mountain restaurants, set among stone terraces with sweeping views over the Qadisha Valley below. Lebanese mountain cuisine is some of the most hearty and satisfying in the country — think fresh mezze, grilled meats, mountain bread, and locally produced olive oil, all served at altitude with crisp mountain air and valley panoramas as your backdrop. A perfect pause before the walk among the cedars.

Les cèdres de Dieu
The final and most unforgettable stop of the day is the Cedars of God — a UNESCO-protected ancient grove of cedar trees at 2,000 metres above sea level, some of which are over 1,000 years old and measure more than 14 metres in circumference. These are the descendants of the vast cedar forests that once blanketed the Lebanese mountains and made Phoenicia the greatest maritime power of the ancient world — their timber used to build the ships of Byblos, the temples of Solomon, and the palaces of Egypt. A gentle 45-minute walk along the marked trail takes you through the grove, among trees of extraordinary scale and silence. Your guide explains the ecological significance of this protected forest and the millennia of history written in its ancient trunks.
