Umi Jigoku, or “Sea Hell,” is the largest of Beppu’s Hells and is famous for its striking cobalt-blue hot spring pond. Despite its beautiful appearance, the water temperature reaches nearly 98°C, with steam rising powerfully into the air. Surrounded by a tranquil Japanese garden and seasonal flowers such as lotus in summer, Umi Jigoku combines harsh geothermal energy with serene natural beauty, offering an unforgettable glimpse into Beppu’s volcanic power.

Kamado Jigoku
Kamado Jigoku, or “Cooking Pot Hell,” is a colorful hot spring attraction divided into several pools of boiling water and bubbling mud. Each pond displays a unique character, from bright turquoise waters to steamy mud geysers. Playful demon statues symbolize the guardian spirits of the Hells and add to the lively atmosphere. Visitors can also experience the steam up close, sometimes used for demonstrations such as cooking rice or eggs with the natural heat. It is one of the most interactive and family-friendly Hells in Beppu.

Jigoku Mushi
Jigoku Mushi Kobo Kannawa offers a rare chance to cook and enjoy food using Beppu’s natural hot spring steam. Known as “Jigoku Mushi” or “Hell Steaming,” this traditional method uses geothermal heat to steam seasonal vegetables, seafood, and meats in large wooden steamers. The result is healthy, flavorful dishes that capture the essence of the region’s hot spring culture. Visitors can prepare their own ingredients, making it both a culinary and cultural experience. This stop connects sightseeing with the everyday life of Beppu residents.
