Materuni Waterfalls
Upon arriving at Materuni Village, located just 15 kilometers from Moshi town and one of the last authentic settlements before Kilimanjaro National Park, complete a quick registration and set off on a guided hike to the waterfall.
Your guide will bring the landscape to life, sharing the origins, customs, and traditions of the Chagga tribe — the indigenous community that has called these fertile slopes home for centuries — alongside insights into the remarkable flora and fauna of the Materuni area. The trail winds through lush tropical rainforest, past coffee and banana farms, with plenty of stops to take photos and videos of the breathtaking scenery.
On the way, pass a local village bar where you can witness the traditional preparation of mbege, the famous Chagga banana beer. Continue through the farms and arrive at the foot of Materuni Waterfalls — one of the tallest waterfalls on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, cascading roughly 90 meters into a natural pool below.

Next, head into the heart of Materuni Village for a fully immersive, hands-on coffee experience. Walk through a working Arabica coffee farm and take part in every stage of the traditional process — from harvesting ripe coffee cherries and peeling the outer skin, to soaking, sun-drying, roasting, and grinding the beans, all accompanied by traditional Chagga songs performed by local community members.
At the end of the process, sit down to taste the very cup of coffee you helped create, using methods passed down through generations. After the coffee tour, the village mammas serve a traditional Chagga lunch prepared with fresh, locally grown, and organic ingredients. The meal is presented buffet-style in clay pots, featuring a colorful spread of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and regional dishes that offer a genuine taste of highland Tanzanian cuisine.
