Kanal von Korinth
Der Kanal von Korinth ist eine Wasserstraße, die die schmale Landenge von Korinth durchquert und den Golf von Korinth mit dem Saronischen Golf verbindet. Somit trennt der Kanal das griechische Festland vom Peloponnes und macht es zu einer Insel.
Der Kanal, obwohl erst im späten 19. Jahrhundert erbaut, war ein 2000 Jahre alter Traum. Vor seinem Bau mussten Schiffe in der Ägäis, die die Adria erreichen oder in Korinth, einer wohlhabenden Schifffahrtsstadt, ankern wollten, den Peloponnes umrunden, was ihre Reise um zusätzliche 185 Seemeilen verlängerte.
Man nimmt an, dass Periander, der Tyrann von Korinth (602 v. Chr.), als Erster die Idee hatte, den Kanal von Korinth zu graben. Da das Projekt angesichts der begrenzten technischen Möglichkeiten der damaligen Zeit zu kompliziert war, errichtete Periander den Diolkos, eine Steinstraße, die den Schiffstransport auf Rädern ermöglichte.
