As you pass by the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown on Lisbon’s waterfront, you’ll see one of the city’s most striking modern landmarks. Designed by architect Charles Correa, the building sits where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic, symbolizing Portugal’s historic voyages into the unknown and today’s scientific exploration. Its pale stone curves, open-air amphitheater, reflecting pools, and broad terraces create a dramatic contrast with nearby historic Belém monuments. Inside, it is a world-renowned center for biomedical research and cancer treatment.

Dropping anchor near Praia de Paço de Arcos feels like arriving at a hidden pocket of calm along the Lisbon coast.
