Snagov Monastery
We begin the tour with a stop at Snagov Monastery, the place believed to hold the tomb of Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler who inspired the famous Dracula character created by Bram Stoker. Originally built in the 14th century and later restored by Vlad the Impaler himself, the monastery is one of the oldest and most important monastic sites in southern Romania. Located on a peaceful island in the middle of Snagov Lake, the church preserves original frescoes, medieval architectural elements, and a unique atmosphere surrounded by legends and stories about the Wallachian ruler.

In this extraordinary landscape, natural gases rising from deep underground continuously push mud to the surface, creating bubbling craters, active mud cones, and a surreal terrain often compared to the surface of the Moon.
Surrounded by cracked earth, grey hills, and constantly changing formations, the Mud Volcanoes create an otherworldly atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Europe. Visitors can walk across this remarkable landscape, observe the bubbling mud formations up close, and capture unforgettable photos of one of Romania’s most photogenic natural sites.
