Kielland came from a wealthy family in Stavanger. His father Jens Zetlitz Kielland (1816-1881), was a banker and vice-consul of Portugal and had many artistic hobbies, including writing numerous novels.

Ledaal is a manor house which is the official residence for the King of Norway in Stavanger. The garden is free to explore.
