Our guide will accompany you to the famous Notre Dame cathedral from the 12th Century which is currently under renovation. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is the most visited monument in France. It was built in the Middle Ages, at the far end of the Île de la Cité. Work started in the 13th century and finished in the 15th century. Badly damaged during the French Revolution, the cathedral was restored in the 19th century by the architect Viollet-le-Duc. Its many visitors come to admire its stained glass and rose windows, the towers, the steeple, and the gargoyles. In 2013, Notre-Dame is celebrated its 850th anniversary. D'une superficie d'environ 7,6 hectares, la place de la Concorde est la plus grande place de Paris. Un projet d'Ange-Jacques Gabriel remporta un concours pour créer un environnement propice à une statue équestre en bronze de Louis XV, commandée précédemment. La place, bordée de douves – techniquement un octogone en raison de ses angles coupés – fut approuvée en 1755, mais la statue du roi par Edmé Bouchardon ne fut installée qu'en 1763. Le côté sud-ouest de la place fut laissé ouvert sur le fleuve. De l'autre côté, encadrant la rue Royale, Gabriel fit construire deux bâtiments identiques, aujourd'hui appelés l'Hôtel de la Marine et l'Hôtel de Crillon.
