Rising originally to about 146 meters from some 2.3 million limestone blocks, it stood as the tallest structure made by human hands for nearly four thousand years. The smooth white casing that once made it gleam is gone, quarried away over the centuries, leaving the stepped core you see today.

built for Khufu's son, is the one most travelers photograph first — not because it is taller, but because it looks it.
