Within the complex, visitors can explore several significant buildings, including the Throne Hall, used for royal ceremonies and official events, and the Silver Pagoda, named for its floor made of over 5,000 silver tiles and home to precious Buddha statues, including the Emerald Buddha and a gold Maitreya Buddha encrusted with diamonds.

Wat Phnom
Wat Phnom is the most important and historic temple in Phnom Penh and is considered the birthplace of the city. Situated on a small hill about 27 meters high, it is the highest religious structure in the capital and a symbol of good luck and protection.
According to legend, the temple was founded in 1372 by a wealthy woman named Lady Penh, who discovered sacred Buddha statues floating in the river. She built a hill and a shrine to house them—giving rise to the name Phnom Penh, meaning “Lady Penh’s Hill.”
Today, Wat Phnom is a popular place for both locals and visitors to pray for good fortune, success, health, and happiness. The temple features beautiful murals, statues, and a peaceful garden atmosphere surrounded by greenery.
A visit to Wat Phnom offers insight into Cambodian spirituality, history, and daily life, making it an essential stop on any Phnom Penh city tour.

Unabhängigkeitsdenkmal
The Independence Monument is one of Phnom Penh’s most important national landmarks, symbolizing Cambodia’s independence from French colonial rule in 1953. Located at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard, the monument stands as a proud reminder of the country’s sovereignty and freedom.
Built in 1958, the monument was designed by renowned Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann in a traditional Khmer-style lotus tower, inspired by the ancient architecture of Angkor. Its distinctive structure makes it a central and iconic feature of the city.
The Independence Monument is the main site for national ceremonies, celebrations, and commemorations, especially on Independence Day (9 November) and other important public events. In the evening, it is beautifully illuminated, making it a popular spot for photography.
Visiting the Independence Monument offers travelers insight into Cambodia’s modern history, national pride, and cultural identity.
