Reiseplan
1
Tempel der Juno
Begin at the Temple of Juno, dedicated to the goddess Hera. The temple features a large sacrificial altar and a deeply worn stone road, still showing the grooves left by ancient chariot wheels. Traces of fire damage on the inner walls speak of the Carthaginian siege in 406 BCE, echoing the city’s turbulent past.
From the height of the hill, you can take in the sweeping views across the Valley of the Temples, a landscape steeped in myth and memory. Pause to reflect, explore freely, or unwind at a nearby café—an ideal spot to connect with fellow travelers and history lovers as you conclude your walk through millennia of heritage.

Temple of Concordia, Agrigento
Next, follow the City Walls Promenade, a scenic path lined with wildflowers, artifacts, and models of ancient transport vehicles. As you walk along this elevated trail, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the valley and imagine how these early tools and roads supported the creation of monumental architecture.
After that, arrive at the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world. Built in the 5th century BCE, it stands almost entirely intact. Look closely and you’ll find a 6th-century Christian church incorporated within its walls—a remarkable example of how different eras and beliefs coexist in Agrigento’s layered history.

Paleochristian necropolis
Then, descend into the Paleochristian Necropolis, home to around 130 tombs. From open-air graves and arcosols to sarcophagi and early catacombs, this site reveals the evolving burial practices of ancient Christians and sheds light on their views of death and the afterlife.

Giardino di Villa Aurea
Continue to the enchanting Aurea Villa, once the residence of Sir Alexander Hardcastle. This English patron dedicated his life and fortune to the excavation and restoration of the Valley. Strolling through his beautifully landscaped gardens, where history and nature blend, offers both a tribute to his passion and a peaceful moment of reflection.

Tempel des Herkules
Then, make your way to Temple of Hercules to relive the epic "Twelve Labours", where Hercules was told to have travelled far and wide over the Isle of Sicily, including Agrigento. The oldest remains in the Valley of Temple, including nine pillars, is a powerful testimony to the rich history of the region.

Tempel des Olympischen Zeus
Finish at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the largest Greek temple ever constructed in the world. With its colossal unfinished statues and massive layout, this legendary sanctuary dedicated to the “Father of all Gods” offers a glimpse into the wealth and ambition of the ancient Greek city of Akragas—modern-day Agrigento—some 2,500 years ago.
