Discover San Ángel, one of Mexico City’s most charming historic neighborhoods. With cobblestone streets, colorful walls, old mansions, peaceful plazas, and an artisan spirit, it feels like a small picturesque town hidden inside the city.
On this walking tour, you will explore San Ángel through its history, religious heritage, and artisan spirit. We will visit Templo del Carmen, Plaza San Jacinto, San Jacinto Church, and Casa del Obispo, while I share stories and facts that help you understand the area.
I will point out artisan shops, galleries, fondas, local restaurants and places you may want to return to after the tour.
Note: Saturdays are lively and crowded because of Bazar del Sábado...

Mercado del Carmen
The tour ends at Mercado del Carmen, a gastronomy and design market in the heart of San Ángel, where we will have the mezcal tasting.
Templo del Carmen is one of the first places that gave origin to the old town of San Ángel. This brief visit will help us understand how the area began to take shape during the Spanish colonial period and why this site became such an important part of the neighborhood’s history.
We will talk about the Spanish conquest, the arrival of Catholicism, and the way religious spaces became part of daily life in Mexico. Inside the church, we will also find an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and a figure of San Judas Tadeo, two deeply meaningful figures in Mexican religious culture. I will share a bit about why they are so important and how they are connected to faith, identity, and popular devotion in Mexico today.

Plaza San Jacinto
After entering the historic heart of San Ángel, we will walk toward Plaza San Jacinto.
On the way, we will stroll along Madero, one of the neighborhood’s cobblestone streets, while talking about San Ángel’s atmosphere, architecture, and everyday life. I will also point out some simple, more local places to eat, as well as small shops where you can find Mexican crafts and local products.
Once we arrive at Plaza San Jacinto, we will talk about the importance of this square and how it becomes especially lively on weekends, when painters and artists fill the plaza with their work. I will also introduce you to Museo Casa del Risco, located right next to the square, one of the most interesting cultural sites in the area.

Iglesia de San Jacinto
Iglesia de San Jacinto is one of the oldest churches in Mexico City and an essential part of San Ángel’s historic identity. Originally founded by the Dominican order in the 16th century, this site helps us understand how the old town developed around religious, artistic, and community life.
Here, we will take a moment to look at its peaceful atrium, its colonial architecture, and the way this church still feels connected to the rhythm of the neighborhood. It is one of those places where San Ángel’s past and present come together naturally: history, faith, local life, and beauty in the middle of one of the city’s most charming areas.

Outside Casa del Obispo, we will pause in a small pedestrian area surrounded by some of San Ángel’s most beautiful artisan shops and galleries.
I will introduce you to the Mexican crafts, objects, and handmade pieces you can find in the area.
This is also a great place to observe San Ángel’s architecture more closely. We will take a moment to look at the details that give this neighborhood its character, from old façades and traditional houses to the textures, colors, and materials that make the area so special.
After that, I will invite you to briefly step inside Casa del Obispo, an artisan shop located in an old traditional mansion. It is worth walking through the store not only to see the pieces inside, but also to get a glimpse of what these old homes looked like from the inside.
We will not visit every shop in detail. Instead, I will point them out so you can return after the tour and explore at your own pace.

The tour ends at Mercado del Carmen, a gastronomy and design market in the heart of San Ángel. Here, we will enjoy a tasting of three mezcals, accompanied by a small Mexican snack, such as guacamole, tlayuda, or another local bite.
During the tasting, I will briefly introduce you to mezcal: how it is made, the different types, and a few interesting facts that will help you understand this Mexican spirit more clearly. As a travel journalist, I have reported on mezcal and female mezcal masters in Oaxaca, so I will share some of that knowledge in a simple and accessible way.
The experience ends at Mercado del Carmen around 2 pm. From there, you can choose to stay and have lunch at the market, visit one of the restaurants or fondas I recommended during the walk, or return to the artisan galleries and shops to explore them more calmly on your own.
