"You're at Trogir's Northern gate. This tiny island, wedged between the coast and Čiovo, takes its shape from millennia of history: the indigenous Delmati (source of "Dalmatia" and the Dalmatian dog), Greek colonists who founded Tragurion in the 3rd century BC, Roman Tragurium, and Slavic tribes from the 7th century who became today's Croatians. Venice ruled for ~400 years (1420–1797), leaving a Venetian Gothic look that earned Trogir the nickname "Little Venice." The island is low-lying (1m above sea level) and flood-prone. This gate, part of the old fortifications, is topped by a statue of Blessed John, the town's patron saint."

Trogir's central square, Ivana Pavla II, is the historic heart of the old town. It's dominated by the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, a Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece begun in the 13th century, famous for its ornate Radovan Portal. Facing it stands the open-sided City Loggia, once a courtroom and meeting hall, alongside a medieval clock tower and the Cipiko Palace, home to one of Trogir's most prominent noble families. For centuries this square has served as the town's civic and social center, much as it does today.

St. Lawrence Cathedral, begun in 1213, is Trogir's architectural crown jewel, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its highlight is the Radovan Portal (1240), a masterpiece by master carver Radovan, featuring Adam and Eve flanked by lions, alongside scenes of biblical stories and seasonal life. The bell tower, built over three centuries, mixes Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Inside, don't miss the Renaissance Chapel of Blessed John of Trogir, carved by Nikola Firentinac, honoring the town's patron saint.

Built in the 15th century (completed 1482) by architect Niccolò di Giovanni, this small chapel was a votive offering after plague epidemics devastated Trogir, killing up to two-thirds of the population in severe outbreaks. Dedicated to St. Sebastian, protector against the Black Death, it features his statue above the entrance and altar, plus a clock tower topped by a statue of Christ. Today the chapel serves as a memorial honoring locals lost in Croatia's 1991–1995 Homeland War.

You'll catch a glimpse of the City Loggia Trogir, known as the town's old Courthouse, but entry is not included.

Founded in 1064, the Convent of St. Nicholas is Trogir's only Benedictine convent still in active use today, its church built into the town's ancient walls and reusing gates from the old Greek-era settlement. Its real treasure lies inside: the Kairos relief, a rare 3rd-century BC Greek marble carving of the deity of the "fortunate moment," discovered hidden in the attic of the noble Statilić family home. Now displayed in the convent's small museum, it's one of Croatia's most valuable ancient artifacts.

The Riva is Trogir's palm-lined waterfront promenade, built on the site of a medieval harbor that once fronted the town's fortifications. For centuries, Venetian trading ships docked here, reflecting Trogir's close commercial ties with Venice; today tourist cruise boats and private yachts take their place. Facing Čiovo island across the channel, the promenade is lined with cafés, restaurants, and wine bars serving local seafood. Free and open year-round, it remains Trogir's favorite meeting spot, especially at sunset.

Built by the Venetian Republic between 1420 and 1437 after their conquest of Trogir, Kamerlengo Fortress served as a city-castle housing Venetian mercenaries and the governor known as the kamerlengo, or treasurer, from whom it later took its name. Once ringed by a moat and drawbridge, it guarded the harbor, with chains stretched nightly to Čiovo island to block enemy ships. Its Venetian winged lion still survives on the walls. Today visitors can climb the tower, and it hosts summer performances.

St. Mark's Tower, begun by the Venetians in 1470 to complete Trogir's fortifications, guards the old town's northwest corner, where it once linked to the city walls and nearby Kamerlengo Castle. Its circular design, two stories, and walls up to 3 meters thick were built to withstand cannon fire during Ottoman incursions; a defensive parapet at the top had already vanished by the 1600s. Nearly surrounded by water, the tower later served as a small bar and now sits abandoned, closed to visitors.

At the northern tip of Trogir's old town, between Kamerlengo Castle and St. Mark's Tower, this small pavilion was built in 1808 by local stonemasons to honor Marshal Auguste de Marmont, Napoleonic France's governor of Dalmatia, remembered locally for improving roads and infrastructure. Six Doric columns support a hexagonal frame; fragments of its original tented stone roof still lie beside the beams, reached by an eastern staircase. Once surrounded entirely by water, it's now a protected cultural monument.

Park Fortin is a shaded waterfront park at the northern edge of Trogir's old town, overlooking the canal separating the island from the mainland. Its centerpiece is St. Mark's Tower, a round 15th-century fortification built by the Venetian Republic to defend against Ottoman naval attacks, originally linked by the town walls to Kamerlengo Fortress nearby. Today the park blends this history with green space: a rose garden, shaded benches, and a memorial honoring Croatian soldiers who fought in the 1990s Homeland War.
