Торговый район рынка Нисики
Head to ground zero of the city’s obsession with quality and tradition: Nishiki Market. Locals call it ‘Kyoto’s Kitchen,’ and we’re ready to tear through it on a lunchtime blitz. Begin with the delicate speciality of silky yuba tofu skin, crafted using pure water from the basin’s thousand-year-old underground aquifer. Then comes the delightfully bizarre tako tamago, the salty punch of an egg-filled baby octopus.

Next, we pay homage to a seafood stall dating back to Nishiki's origins 400 years ago,, where the shokunin’s knife skills have been perfected over generations - carving through deep-red tuna and apricot-orange salmon sashimi that melts effortlessly in your mouth. While we don’t want to spoil all the surprises, there are 15+ tastings to conquer in all, so be sure to bring an appetite.
Take a moment at Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, and rub the legendary bronze cow for good luck, before attacking the serious business of street eats: Japanese beef croquette. This is Ōmi beef - the holy grail of wagyu, prized for its marbling-to-meat ratio and packed into a crispy fried pocket.

Понточо
Cut through the tourist fog and stroll past Shinkyogoku Arcade to the edge of the Kamo River. Stalk history through narrow Pontocho Alley, a maze of old wooden structures and hidden machiya townhouses. Step into Gion, a district long defined by secret rendezvous with the elusive geisha.
Past the historic Pontocho Kaburenjo Theater and the icon of Izumo-no-Okuni, our next feast is an obanzai set, the hidden soul of Kyoto home cooking built on fresh, seasonal ingredients, and perfect Japanese simplicity. Explore textures like vegetables steeped in an umami dashi broth, to grilled eggplant brushed with a sweet miso glaze - all washed down with a cold glass of umeshu plum wine. It’s a tasting experience that is 'soy' good, you won't want it to end.

Our final act is a visit to a humble eatery with a signature specialty: the Kyoto One-Sen pancake. It’s messy, unpolished street feasting, built on a kaleidoscope of flavour: rich wagyu beef, a runny egg yolk, springy konjac jelly and green scallions provide the internal logic, while crunchy tenkasu bits and umami-packed shrimps bring the noise. The whole thing is soaked in a highly addictive house Worcestershire sauce blend and dusted with nori seaweed. If you aren't already drooling, you might need your taste buds checked.
Finish on a subtle note with sakura mochi - a soft, sweet cherry-blossom rice cake wrapped in a salted cherry leaf. This tour ends at the Minamiza Theater, the birthplace of Kabuki, where the world of the geisha meets the historic capital’s immortal history.
