India Gate
The India Gate was built to commemorate the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I. The names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919 are also inscribed on the memorial. The foundation stone was laid in 1921, and it was inaugurated in 1931.
Amar Jawan Jyoti: The Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier) was added beneath the arch in 1971 following the Indo-Pakistani War. It was a black marble pedestal with a reversed rifle and a soldier's helmet, with an eternal flame burning beside it. This served as a memorial to India's unknown soldiers. In 2022, the flame was merged with the flame at the newly built National War Memorial, which is located in the same C-Hexagon complex.
