Formerly one of the seven great theatres in the city, today La Fenice is the only opera house in Venice. Punta della Dogana separates the Grand Canal from the Giudecca Canal. Due to its strategic location, it housed customs and salt warehouses. During the 15th century, maritime customs, formerly located near the Arsenal, was moved to the western end of the Dorsoduro neighborhood.
