This self-guided walking audio tour follows Dylan Thomas through the Welsh port city he called an "ugly, lovely town." Starting at Castle Square, the route winds past the ruins of Swansea Castle, the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea Museum, and the National Waterfront Museum before ending at the Civic Centre on the Maritime Quarter waterfront. Narrator Adrian Metcalfe, a Swansea native and Cambridge-trained classicist, weaves readings from Thomas's work into tales of medieval sieges, the wartime bombing raids that flattened much of the town centre, and the industrial boom that once made Swansea "Copperopolis," tracing the poet's own path toward Swansea Bay and the Meridian Tower.

This self-guided audio tour begins in Castle Square. You'll hear a recording of Dylan Thomson, hear from the tour's producer and hear how the app works.
Castle Square is the historic heart of Swansea city centre, Wales, named for the ruins of Swansea Castle that still stand at its edge. Redeveloped in the 1990s, the square today is a paved, tree-lined public space with a striking wave-shaped canopy structure, fountains, and open-air seating. It's a popular spot for events, markets, and outdoor performances, hosting an amphitheater used for concerts and gatherings. Surrounded by shops, cafes, and bars, it serves as a lively social hub linking the city's shopping district to the Maritime Quarter and seafront, and is a frequent gathering point for festivals and public celebrations throughout the year.

Swansea Castle is a ruined medieval castle in the centre of Swansea, Wales, originally built around 1107 by Norman lord Henry de Beaumont as a motte-and-bailey stronghold overlooking the River Tafwys. It was rebuilt in stone in the 13th and 14th centuries and endured repeated attacks from Welsh forces during ongoing conflicts with Anglo-Norman rule. Its most distinctive feature is the elegant arcaded parapet along the New Hall wing, a rare architectural flourish for a Welsh castle, echoing similar work at the Bishop's Palace in St Davids. Over time the castle fell into disrepair, with parts later used as a prison and, remarkably, incorporated into surrounding commercial buildings. Today its surviving ruins stand amid the modern city centre, near Castle Square, offering a striking contrast between medieval heritage and contemporary urban life, and remain a protected historic monument.

Swansea's Sail Bridge is a striking cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle crossing over the River Tawe, opened in 2004 after a design-to-completion process of under 15 months. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects with engineering by Flint & Neill and built by Balfour Beatty, its curved 142-metre deck hangs asymmetrically from a single 42-metre steel mast via eighteen spiral-strand cable stays, evoking a billowing sail. Weighing around 370 tonnes and costing roughly £2.8 million, it features tuned mass dampers and aerodynamic fairings to control movement. The bridge links Swansea's city centre with the SA1 Waterfront/Port Tawe area, becoming a modern landmark of the regenerated docklands.

Dylan Thomas Square sits in Swansea's Maritime Quarter, overlooking North Dock with its moored yachts and historic vessels, including the retired Helwick lightship and the tugboat Canning. At its centre stands a bronze statue of the poet, sculpted by John Doubleday and unveiled in 1984, depicting Thomas in a contemplative pose. The square is flanked by the Dylan Thomas Theatre, home to Swansea Little Theatre (of which Thomas was once an amateur member) and adorned with murals from Under Milk Wood, plus the Tram Centre/Swansea Museum, which recalls the Mumbles Railway, the world's oldest passenger railway. It's a lively hub for literary events and tourists alike.

Green Dragon Lane is a narrow historic passage in Swansea town centre, linking Wind Street to the Strand. Its name comes from the Green Dragon Inn, a pub that once stood at the lane's junction with the Strand. That connection matters because the Strand was Swansea's original quayside and riverbank, lined with wharfs and warehouses, before the River Tawe was diverted in the 19th century as part of the town's dock expansion. So the lane once led straight down to the water's edge. Today it survives as a quiet, easily overlooked relic of Swansea's pre-industrial waterfront layout, tucked between the busier Wind Street and Strand thoroughfares in the city centre.

Follow the open space in front of you around to the left, keeping it on your right as you go.
There is a small car park in front of you. Walk to the left of that car park crossing the road and then walking towards the sea. This road to the sea is called The Slipway.
Keep going until you see the sea and beach in front. I will speak to you when you reach the Promenade.

Stretching out ahead of you is the beautiful expanse of Swansea Bay, but immediately ahead is the amazing architecture of the Swansea Observatory. Originally built in 1989 to a design by Robin Campbell, it was the property of the Swansea Astrological Society and housed a 20-inch telescope - it was the largest in Wales of its kind. It is made of two towers with masks on each tower representing the four directions and winds and there is a goddess of the skies on top. It has an alternative name - The Tower of the Ecliptic...a beautiful name for a beautiful building. The SAS, as the Swansea Astrological Society is affectionately known, have left the tower now and it is about to experience a new life as a cafe and a self-catering flat; one of the best early morning coffee views in Swansea.

Cambrian Place is one of Swansea's oldest surviving streets, a Grade II listed terrace built around 1820 in the city's Maritime Quarter near the River Tawe. Its elegant Georgian architecture makes it a rare survivor of the heavy Luftwaffe bombing raids that devastated much of Swansea's town centre during the Second World War. After decades of decline, the historic building is now undergoing major restoration: Pobl Group, backed by over £5 million from the Welsh Government, is leading a 74-week renovation (led by contractor John Weaver) starting October 2024 to convert it into 31 affordable, low-carbon apartments with solar panels, heat pumps, and restored period brickwork—giving the landmark a sustainable new life.

Captain Cat
The tour passes by the Captain Cat sculpture. You'll hear about the sculpture before moving on with the tour.
The Captain Cat statue stands at Abernethy Quay in Swansea's Maritime Quarter, near the marina. Created by Welsh sculptor Robert Thomas and unveiled on 1 March 1990, the bronze figure depicts a bearded, blind sea captain in a peaked cap and rubber boots, gripping a rope with a bell, gazing out over the water. It commemorates Captain Cat, one of the most beloved characters from Dylan Thomas's 1954 radio drama Under Milk Wood, who narrates much of the play from his window, drifting between village life and memories of his seafaring past. The statue is a popular tribute linking Swansea's waterfront regeneration to its rich literary heritage and Dylan Thomas's enduring legacy.
