Located about 30 km from Bikaner, the Karni Mata Temple is one of Rajasthan’s most unusual and fascinating shrines. Dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered 14th-century mystic and incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple is world-famous for its thousands of black rats, locally known as kabbas, which are considered sacred and protected by devotees. Worshippers believe these rats are reincarnations of Karni Mata’s followers and bring good fortune when spotted, especially the rare white rats, which are regarded as highly auspicious.
