In an ever-changing world we continuously change the story of the city. We walk about 2 miles/3 km. Much of Portland’s history can be told through the buildings and street layouts including the prioritization of parks in the city center. It’s not a dry history: full of back-room deals, early deaths and greed; and then there were hippies! How did Portland become the 1st city on the West Coast with a fine art museum? How did the city's early cultural reputation influence its mid-20th century; and how did it become such a lightning rod for racial justice protests? Portland's street art culture is older than any of us, but until the past decade, the culture was a shadowy one. Thanks to support from a strong collective of street artists, the inner Eastside is the heart of the intense, passionate street art scene. Start in that heart, where we will safely fit you for a bike and helmet, ready for a sweet 4-6 mile/8-10 km ride to visit some of the oldest art forms and canvases (wheat paste and an incredible user-created skate park) and some of the newest (cool spray paint styles and brand-new buildings made for art). You'll learn about graffiti culture and some of our long-time favorite artists and the city's newest darlings, pass by cool old import shops filled with art inside and out, learn how the art culture is connected to the protest scene, and leave with a phone packed with vibrant photos! Ever been interested in trying your hand at blowing glass? Join me in my flameworking studio and learn how to make your first piece of glass art with us! Borosilicate glass blowing is a unique art that uses a table-mounted torch to melt and manipulate glass. While more niche than traditional glass blowing, this type of flameworking offers participants a unique, hands-on artistic experience. Each student will be equipped with their own torch and will make several glass pieces with support from Brahim.

In 1903 the Alberta streetcar line spurred the growth of this then-suburban neighborhood. Over the next decade, as the population of Portland doubled, Alberta thrived and its business district would mirror those streetcar districts throughout the city. In the 1940s, as the automobile took over, redlining created a thriving multicultural neighborhood that would become known for art, jazz, great food, and a tight community. We'll explore this now hip neighborhood, its ice cream, coffee, art, history, and find out what makes it so special. One hour, 1.25 miles (2 km).
