Zuiryu-ji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, and one of Japan’s finest examples of early Edo-period Zen architecture. Founded in the 17th century, it is closely associated with the Maeda clan, the feudal rulers of the Kaga Domain. The temple’s main buildings, including the Sanmon Gate, Butsuden (Buddha Hall), and Hatto (Dharma Hall), are designated National Treasures.
Zuiryu-ji is distinguished by its perfectly symmetrical layout, which reflects Zen values such as order, discipline, and clarity. Rather than relying on rich decoration, the temple expresses beauty through proportion, structure, and spatial balance. Covered corridors link the halls, creating a calm sequence of light, shadow, and movement.
Still functioning as an active Zen temple, Zuiryu-ji offers visitors a quiet setting to experience how Zen philosophy is expressed through architecture and space.
