Toshie studied fashion art prior to moving into jewelry design. She studied metal chasing in New York, designed jewelry for a prominent Tokyo atelier, and focused on a hands-on approach to jewelry making. The joy of working metal with her hands, be it gold jointing, metal chasing, or creating magnetism, ultimately led Toshie to the craft of kintsugi.
