Palais des Doges
The Doge palace in Saint Mark’s Square, was the Government’s house from cent. IX to the last Doge in 1797.
Exploring the path through the palace chambers allows the visitor to comprehend the complex structure of the Venetian government, which became a model for the modern political systems.
The rooms of the Doge’s Palace are brilliant examples of the typical renaissance decorations in Italy: golden and marble reliefs, sculptured fireplaces, wooden portals and, of course, paintings, that tell the history of Venice and its lagoon, by the most important venetian artists: Tintoretto, Tiziano, Veronese and others. The visit ends in a totally different atmosphere crossing the Bridge of Sighs and exploring the palace of the prisons, the first example of a single function building destined as National prison.
