Le Taj Mahal a été qualifié à juste titre de « Rêve de marbre ». Il existe peut-être des bâtiments plus grandioses par leur conception et plus élaborés par leur réalisation, mais il n'en demeure pas moins un chef-d'œuvre d'une beauté lyrique inégalée au monde. Le Taj Mahal a été construit par l'empereur Shah Jahan pour abriter la dépouille mortelle de son épouse bien-aimée, Arjumand Banu Begum, plus connue sous le nom de Mumtaz Mahal, « l'Élue du Palais ». On dit que plus de trente et un millions de roupies ont été dépensés pour sa construction et que 20 000 hommes ont été nécessaires pour la construire en vingt-deux ans. Ce chef-d'œuvre incomparable, en marbre blanc, a été commencé en 1631, un an après la mort de la reine, et s'élève sur une terrasse surplombant la Yamuna. L'entrée principale du Taj est une structure de trois étages, incrustée d'ornements et d'inscriptions du Coran en ardoise noire. Les lettres sont graduées pour une apparence uniforme vue d'en bas. Le jardin du Taj est aménagé dans un style formel. Un canal et des fontaines en bronze divisent le jardin pavé.

Agra Fort is a historical fort in the city of Agra in India. To the South of the Agra Fort Station lies the Fort of Agra, on the right bank of yamuna, two kilometers from the Taj. Many magnificent buildings are situated within the fort, which has a circuit of over amile. The wall itself is a work of fine architecture and embodies such feautres as battlements, embrasures and machicolations skilfully designed to give this massive enclosure and aesthetic character. The Fort, as it stands today, represents the combined efforts of three successive sovereigns. Designed and built by Akbar, it was added to by Jahangir and Shah Jahan. It is in the fort that the division between the two architectural phases of Mughal style is plainly demarcated. Akbar's earlier structure were demolished some sixty-five years later to make way for the more sumptuous marble pavilions of his grandson Shah Jahan.
