Le canal de Corinthe relie le golfe de Corinthe au golfe Saronique, en mer Égée. Il traverse l'étroit isthme de Corinthe et sépare le Péloponnèse de la Grèce continentale, faisant sans doute de la péninsule une île. Creusé au niveau de la mer, le canal traverse l'isthme et ne comporte aucune écluse. Long de 6,4 kilomètres (4 miles), il ne mesure que 21,4 mètres (70 pieds) de large à sa base, ce qui le rend infranchissable pour la plupart des navires modernes. Aujourd'hui, son importance économique est limitée et il constitue principalement une attraction touristique.

In the estimation of George Forrest, “It is the most impressive of the acropoleis of mainland Greece.With its secure water supply, Acrocorinth's fortress was repeatedly used as a last line of defense in southern Greece because it commanded the Isthmus of Corinth, repelling foes from entry by land into the Peloponnese peninsula. Currently, it is one of the most important medieval castle sites of Greece.
