Nikko Tosho-gu

Lake Chuzenji
Lake Chuzenji is a tranquil alpine lake located in Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture, sitting at an elevation of 1,269 meters. Formed by a volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai around 20,000 years ago, it is one of Japan’s highest natural lakes. Surrounded by forested mountains, the lake offers stunning seasonal scenery—from lush greenery in summer to vibrant autumn leaves and snow-covered shores in winter. Popular activities include hiking along the 25 km lakeside trail, visiting the nearby Kegon Falls, taking boat cruises, and relaxing in lakeside hot springs. Kegon Falls
Kegon Falls is a stunning 97-meter waterfall in Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture. It flows from Lake Chuzenji and is famous for its dramatic drop and beautiful surroundings, especially during autumn foliage and winter ice formations. Visitors can view the falls from an upper observation deck or take an elevator down to a closer lower deck. It’s easily accessible and a must-see natural attraction in the region.
