Starting the tour with a trip to Schaffhausen town, situated on the Upper Rhine River, our guide will shed light on the area’s historical heritage. This discovery presents the wonderful opportunity to learn of Schaffhausen’s fascinating backstory, including the town’s establishment, the founding of famous heritage sites — such as the Benedictine monastery of All Saints, and monumental events that affected the area — including the bombing raid in 1944 which killed around 40 civilians. Upon wandering through the idyllic streets and admiring its assortment of vibrant baroque buildings, you’ll be completely immersed in Schaffhausen’s culture and history, where tales of Switzerland’s Middle Ages echo among the cobbled streets. After journeying through the town and unfolding its rich history, there will be a brief lunch break where you can absorb the spectacular surrounding scenery and enjoy a serene moment of rest before continuing to Rhine Falls.

The guide will accompany you on a train ride to the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich, where the breathtaking Rhine Falls resides, surrounded by picturesque views of the surrounding natural landscapes. This majestic destination is deemed the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with enormous volumes of water flowing across an impressive width of 150 m (492 ft) and a height of 23 m (75 ft). During this visit, the guide will expand upon various stories revolving around the historical heritage of Rhine Falls to illuminate the destination’s significance. From its prehistoric formation around 14,000 to 17,000 years ago (during the last ice age), to its purpose as a bustling waterway for transporting shipments during the 1900s, you’ll discover the full timeline of Rhine Falls.
