Itinerary
1
Cava dei Balestrieri
Our tour starts from Cava dei Balestrieri, an important historical landmark of San Marino. Since the 14th century there is evidence of a corps of crossbowmen with the task of defending the city walls and maintaining public order.
15 minutes
2
Basilica of Saint Marinus
The Basilica del Santo also commonly known as the Basilica of San Marino is the main sacred building in the city, dedicated to and containing the relics of San Marino, the patron saint and founder of the country.
20 minutes
3
Chiesa di San Pietro
Next to the Basilica is the small church of San Pietro, dating back to the 16th century and rebuilt in 1826. According to legend, the apse of the little church is entirely carved out of living rock, and inside there are two niches which, according to legend, served as beds for San Marino and San Leo.
15 minutes
4
Piazza della Liberta
Piazza della Libertà is the beating heart of San Marino and hosts some of the most significant buildings of the Republic, such as the Palazzo Pubblico, the Secretariat of Tourism and the Philatelic Office. Although it may seem small, this square often hosts important events such as concerts and fairs.
15 minutes
5
Museo Creature della Notte - Vampiri e Licantropi
Located in the historic center of San Marino, an evocative place in itself, the Museum of Vampires and Werewolves takes you on a journey into the dark.
45 minutes
6
Museo di Stato
The State Museum of San Marino, opened in 1899 and initially located in Palazzo Valloni, has been located in Palazzo Pergami Belluzzi since 2001. It houses a vast collection of almost 5,000 pieces, including works of art, archaeological finds, paintings and historical objects, many of which come from San Marino and illustrate its history.
45 minutes
7
Porta San Francesco
his is the main entrance to the third ring of the walls, also known as Porta del Paese, which serves as the official entrance to the historic centre of San Marino.
5 minutes
8
Guaita Tower
The First Tower of San Marino, also known as “Rocca” or “Guaita,” is one of the oldest Italian fortresses. The tower, with a pentagonal base, underwent various reinforcements and reconstructions, especially in the second half of the 15th century, and in the 16th century it was equipped with a sloping roof.
30 minutes
9
Falesia Second Tower
On the second peak of Mount Titano, the highest at 756 meters, stands the Castello della Cesta, also known as Fratta. Built at the end of the 11th century with a pentagonal plan, this building served as the headquarters of the guard corps and housed some prison cells.
30 minutes
10
Third Tower - Montale
The Third called Montale dates back to the end of the 13th century. It is the “smallest” in size, but it played a strategic role in defense: it is in fact located in the best position for the lookout.
