The peculiarity is given by the "tower-houses", developed in height and often with two entrances: one on the main street below and one at the back, at a higher level, a legacy of the ancient need to escape in case of attack. The village descends steeply to a small and picturesque marina nestled among the rocks, where the fishermen's boats are pulled to the shore. Riomaggiore is the starting point of the famous Via dell'Amore, the pedestrian path carved into the rock that connects it to Manarola. Manarola is historically linked to the cultivation of vines on terraces overlooking the sea. Here the famous and precious wine of the Cinque Terre, Sciacchetrà, is produced.
