Monsanto
Monsanto is one of the most iconic villages in Portugal and is often known as the most Portuguese village in Portugal.
Monsanto stands out for its homes built between huge granite blocks, many of which take advantage of the rocks themselves as walls or roofs. This unique integration between architecture and nature makes the village a unique place.
With very ancient (pre-Roman) origins, Monsanto was occupied by Romans, Visigods and Muslims. In the 12th century, it was regained by the Christians and handed over to the Order of the Templars, who reinforced its defensive importance. Over the centuries, it remained a strategic point due to its elevated location.
