The tomb began with an unknown service member from World War I, and today it is the tomb of three unidentified service members. Its meaning has evolved to represent the memory of all military members throughout American history.

Although Memorial Day ceremonies are held all over the United States, many consider the services at the Memorial Amphitheatre as the official nation's ceremony in honor of members of the American service.
