The great central square of Madrid is located in the heart of Madrid de los Austrias, the oldest part of the city. Steeped in history, the bustling square is the perfect place to start your walk through one of Madrid's most charming districts. While you're there, have a bite to eat or coffee on one of the sunny terraces, pick up a souvenir at the main Fun and Tickets office, watch the street musicians and performers work their magic, and soak up the city's rich history. .

You are now in the Calle Mayor area. One of the main streets of Madrid that will take you from the Puerta del Sol to the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace.

Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

Congreso de Los Diputados
The Palacio de las Cortes Españolas, the parliament of Spain, in the Plaza de las Cortes, was built on the site of the former convent of the Holy Spirit. No longer occupied by the monks, it was used as the seat of the Congress between 1834 and 1841, before which the Congress had no fixed address. The tender called for the construction of the current building was awarded to the architect Narciso Pascual y Colomer, and the works were completed in 1850.

Mercado San Miguel

Catedral de la Almudena
Located in the Madrid de los Austrias, you will find the Madrid Cathedral which has a short but tortuous history. The first plans of the church were drawn in 1879 by Francisco de Cubas, who wanted to create a pantheon for the late queen María de las Mercedes. The first stone was laid in 1883, but when Pope Leo XIII granted a bull in 1885 for the creation of the bishopric of Madrid-Alcalá, the plans of the church were changed to those of a cathedral.
