Historic City of Ayutthaya
One of Thailand's most captivating destinations that draws countless visitors is the Historic City of Ayutthaya. Renowned as the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom, Ayutthaya thrived for over 400 years, from the 14th to the 18th centuries. During its golden age, it became one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan urban centers, serving as a hub for global trade and diplomacy. The city was strategically located on an island surrounded by three rivers, which connected it to the sea. This location was chosen because it sat above the Gulf of Siam’s tidal bore, which existed at the time, providing a natural defense against potential attacks by foreign warships.

Wat Mahathat
Wat Mahathat, also known as the Temple of the Great Relics, is situated nearly at the heart of Ayutthaya. Not only was it the symbolic center housing the sacred relics of the Buddha, but it also served as the residence of the Supreme Patriarch, the leader of Thai Buddhist monks. This historic temple is believed to have been constructed in the 14th century A.D., during the early Ayutthaya period.

Recognized for its historical significance, it was officially registered as a national historic site by the Fine Arts Department on March 5, 1935. As the most important temple in Ayutthaya, it was situated within the grounds of the Grand Palace and served as a prototype for the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam)
Wat Lokaya Sutha, “the temple of the Earth” is located near the North West tip of the historical island near the old Royal Palace and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Highlight of the monastery is its 42 meter long Reclining Buddha image, usually draped in orange cloth. While the central prang remains in relatively good condition, much of the temple's main structures have been reduced to their foundations over time.
