Situated in the center of Paris along the Seine River, the Conciergerie is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands as one of the oldest remnants of the Palais de la Cité, which served as both residence and seat of power for French monarchs during the Middle Ages.
Transformed into a prison for the Parliament of Paris towards the late 14th century, it continued to play a significant role as an incarceration facility throughout the French Revolution with the establishment of the Revolutionary Court. Among its most notable inmates was Marie-Antoinette. During the Restoration period in the 19th century, a memorial chapel was erected on her cell’s site and is included in guided tours.
