Itinerary
1
Newcastle Central Station
Our first pub is here, it would be a shame not to see and learn a little about this grand old famous railway station.
5 minutes
2
The Centurion
Our first pub is one of the finest in the land and with a fascinating history. It may be the most lavish pub too with an interior said to cost tens of millions of pounds.
30 minutes
3
The Lit & Phil
As we go around the city we will learn a little about some of the places we see and none are finer than this veritable Tyneside institution.
5 minutes
4
Newcastle city walls
See one of the best sections of the city walls that are still standing despite the best efforts of Scottish invaders!
5 minutes
5
Newcastle Castle
See the famous castle that gave this city its name all the way back in the 11th century. We might see a few ruins from the Roman (old) castle that date back a thousand or so years earlier nearby,
10 minutes
6
Bridge Hotel
A gorgeously atmospheric Victorian pub between the castle and the bridges which also has some fantastic ruins in the garden!
30 minutes
7
High Level Bridge
A stunning old bridge with walkways and a road like many others but with trains going on top. You get amazing views from here too.
5 minutes
8
The Black Gate
An addition to the castle, the Back Gate was built in 1247 and has a history suitably grim given its name!
5 minutes
9
Roman Fort (Pons Aelius) Foundations
The current Norman Castle is pretty much built next to and on the old Roman castle but we can still see some of the Roman foundations and ruins here... fitting given Hadrians Wall famously runs through Newcastle.
5 minutes
10
Newcastle Cathedral
One of 3 cathedrals in Newcastle (many would say 4 if we include St James Park, home of the legendary Newcastle United) and there only cathedral in Britain named after St Nicholas the inspiration for Santa in the USA though over here we have Father Christmas instead.
5 minutes
11
Cloth Market
We will walk through the old cloth market. A street away is the old Groat or wheat market and the famous Bigg Market, originally for Barley. Barley is still much consumed here in its alcoholic form!

A fantastic pub near the stage doors to the theatre with a range of over 30 beers and ales.

Step inside from the streets of Newcastle and experience generations of preserved history within our magnificent Grade I listed building. Meander through history. Wander past the unique and wonder at the unexpected. Shop the handmade, taste the exotic, smell the fresh and experience the exciting.
Our historic alleyways are the result of unique characters, exciting cuisines and vibrant cultures fusing together to create an exceptional melting pot of human energy.
This is the Grainger Market, the beating heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
10 minutes

Central Arcade
A hidden jewel in Newcastle, this gorgeous old shopping arcade is like nothing else.
5 minutes

City Tavern
This old pub started life as a stables but don't let that put you off. Modest looking on the outside, inside is another matter and it's a grand place to end our pub tour.
