Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Europe, a granite island rising from a vast tidal bay on the border of Normandy and Brittany. On this self-guided walking tour, you'll trace its story from a 708 AD vision of the Archangel Michael to a medieval fortress that never fell to the English. You'll also discover how the same tides that inspired centuries of pilgrimage nearly swallowed the island entirely – and how a major engineering project brought it back.
The tour begins at La Ferme Saint-Michel, a former sheepfold-turned-restaurant at the edge of the bay. Walking toward the Mont along the Couesnon River, you'll learn how 19th-century polders – farmland reclaimed ...

Itinerary
1
La Ferme Saint-Michel
Starting your walk right outside La Ferme Saint-Michel, you'll hear about this former sheepfold turned restaurant, known for its salt-meadow lamb and regional Norman cooking. You'll pass by rather than stop here as part of the tour.
2
Walking along the dam, you'll hear how it releases water at low tide to flush sediment from the bay and restore the island's maritime character. This is a pass-by viewpoint with a panoramic view of Mont Saint-Michel.
3
Mont-Saint-Michel
You'll pass by and pause to take in your first full view of Mont Saint-Michel, the "Eighth Wonder of the World," as your guide shares its 1,300-year history of monks, sieges, and legend. Entry to the island itself is free, though the Abbey requires a separate ticket.
4
La Porte du Roy
You'll pass through the King's Gate, built in 1435, as your guide explains its role as the main defensive entrance to the village and its current use as Mont Saint-Michel's town hall.
5
Grande Rue
Walking along the Grande Rue, you'll hear about the medieval inns and shops that once lined this narrow cobbled street leading up to the Abbey. You'll pass through without stopping, though you're welcome to browse the shops on your own.
6
Passing by the Liberty Tower, formerly known as Béatrix Tower, you'll learn about this horseshoe-shaped 15th-century bastion and its sweeping views over the bay and the Couesnon River.
7
Tour du Nord
You'll pass by the North Tower, the tallest and oldest of Mont Saint-Michel's towers, while your guide points out the swirling tides below and the birdlife nesting in its walls.
8
Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel
From the Jerusalem Esplanade, you'll pass by the foot of the grand staircase leading up to the Abbey entrance, hearing about its founding in 708 and its centuries as a monastery, fortress, and prison. Entry to the Abbey requires a separate ticket and is not included in this tour.
