Itinerary
1
Miradouro Pico Dos Barcelos
The large valley that serves as a natural amphitheater for Funchal, on one side, and the calm sea that bathes the south coast of Madeira, on the other: this is what you can see from the Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint.
20 minutes
2
Miradouro Eira do Serrado
At an altitude of 1095 meters, the Eira do Serrado viewpoint offers an unobstructed view of the parish of Curral das Freiras, surrounded by the grandeur of Madeira's characteristic green mountains.
30 minutes
3
Valley of the Nuns
With a unique location, in a deep valley similar to a volcano crater, the parish of Curral das Freiras is one of the most picturesque locations on the island of Madeira. Its surroundings are marked by the imposing presence of the mountain peaks that protect the town.
With an area of 25.07 km², where around 2000 inhabitants are distributed, Curral das Freiras is the largest parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. Its history spans several centuries. In fact, we need to go back to the 16th century to understand the origin of its name.
45 minutes
4
Camara De Lobos
Câmara de Lobos, located on Madeira's south coast, was the first place inhabited by João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered this 'pearl of the Atlantic'. He stayed there between 1420 and 1424, so this was the first settlement created in Madeira, elevated to parish status in 1430. Its historical legacy is, therefore, very relevant.
30 minutes
5
Cabo Girao
This large coastal cliff is also an excellent place for paragliding and BASE jumping (Portuguese parachutist Mário Pardo even chose it for his famous motorbike jump). In addition, near Cabo Girão, you can find one of the island's main pilgrimage sites: the Nossa Senhora de Fátima chapel, built in 1951.
There are plenty of reasons to visit this ex-libris of Madeira.
