At OKADA in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, we share Japanese traditional culture through hands-on experiences in shodo (calligraphy), sado (tea ceremony), and Yuzen dyeing.
In our Yuzen dyeing workshop, you can experience Kata-Yuzen, one of the traditional kimono-making techniques. Kata-Yuzen is a method of creating designs by layering multiple stencil sheets. Each stencil is carefully carved by specialized craftsmen by hand, and dozens of stencils are required to complete a single kimono—sometimes even up to one hundred.
