Royal Botanical Gardens
Its origins go back to the reign of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinha (1747-1780) when it was his royal residential compound and park. It formally became a botanical garden in 1821 when the redoubtable Sir Edward Barnes was Governor of Ceylon. The garden covers over 150 acres of floral delight, including a spectacular arboretum, over 100 endemic plants, a fantastic collections of palms, bamboo, cacti, flowers and orchids in a delightful ‘orchid house’. The Herbarium consists of over 200,000 dried and preserved plant specimens, collected over a span of over 180 years.
The two highlights of the Garden would arguably be the orchid house and a ‘stately’ avenue of royal palms. Another favorite is the giant Javan fig tree, situated on the great lawn – a living geodesic dome.
