Meet 5 MINUTES EARLIER AT THE SAGRADE OF THE CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
The Sasso Barisano takes its name because of its position. Being oriented towards north-west, it takes its name from the city of Bari. Initially it represents the primary part of the stones together with the Civita.

Piazza San Pietro Caveoso
The square of San Pietro Caveoso, with a rectangular plan, has a beautiful view of the ravine highlighted by an arch on the left of the homonymous church. A view that offers a particular glimpse of the opposite Murgia with its rock churches and on the right the ridge with the 'empty eye sockets', natural cavities adapted, in ancient times, to pastoral needs.

Piazza Giovanni Pascoli
Located to the left of the seventeenth-century Palazzo Lanfranchi, Piazzetta Pascoli takes its name from the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli, who in Matera, between 1882 and 1884, began his career as a teacher of Latin and Greek. It is the point from which you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Sassi of Matera.
4
Casa grotta del Casalnuovo
In Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo you can experience a real house of the Sassi through its original furniture and the tools of daily use that the family that lived there used in everyday life. What are commonly called Case Grotta are real ethnographic collections, small museums with objects of common use and work from the times when the Sassi were inhabited, before the depopulation occurred in the fifties. Inside, the original rooms and furnishings of the house are reconstructed before the ancient districts were depopulated in the late 1950s.

Chiesa Rupestre di San Giuliano o Madonna Delle Grazie
In ancient times, as can be seen from the pastoral visit of Mgr. Saracen of 1543 – 1544, this church was named after St. Eustace.
The entrance leads into a courtyard at the bottom of which opens the chapel; it is surmounted by a terracotta bas-relief, depicting the Madonna and Child.
The interior has undergone various tampering, so little remains of the original structure.
An imposing Baroque altar interrupts the ancient development of the crypt. The frescoes are still in good condition. Behind the altar, the ceiling is decorated with coffered panels and ornamental motifs.
