Basilica del Voto Nacional
The Basilica is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its construction was supervised by the French architect, Emilio Tarlier, with the intention that it be designed in a manner similar to the famous Notre Dame de Paris and the Cathedral of Burgos in Spain. The Basilica is 140 meters long and its two towers reach a height of 115 meters, making it the tallest neo-Gothic church in South America. It contains 24 side chapels dedicated to the provinces of Ecuador. Like many Gothic churches of this size, the Basilica is designed in the form of a Latin cross, with the central nave functioning as the body of the structure. There are seven access doors, three on the facades and four on the sides. It has a subway crypt and an austere pantheon where the remains of several presidents of the republic rest.
