Built from 1406 to 1420, the Forbidden City was the former Chinese imperial palace and winter residence of the Chinese emperors from the Ming Dynasty (from Emperor Yongle onwards) to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1420 to 1924). The Forbidden City was the residence of the Chinese emperors and their families, and for more than 500 years was the ceremonial and political center of the Chinese government. Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been in the care of the Palace Museum, whose vast collection of art and artifacts is based on the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
