The Temple of Khnum is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Khnum, who was the creator of both men and women. In his incarnation as Khnum-Hapi, he revived the springs of the Nile each year to bring about the annual Nile flood. His wife Menhit, the city goddess Nephu, and the goddesses Heka and Neith were also worshipped. The exposed temple lies nine meters below street level in the city of Esna, in a hollowed-out depression. Stairs lead to the temple entrance. The parts of the temple visible today date from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

The Temple of Khnum is an ancient Egyptian temple located in Esna, Luxor Governorate, Upper Egypt, about 55 kilometers south of Luxor. Its ancient Egyptian name was Hut-Khnum (“House of Khnum”). The only remaining part of the temple is the Pyrenees, the actual temple vestibule. The hall, supported by 24 columns and with a intact roof, is situated in the center of the city on the Nile River, 200 meters west of the riverbank.
